Poor communities across the United States face a looming and untold crisis in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown. In high-poverty counties, those with a poverty rate of 20 percent or more, subprime mortgages make up an abnormally high share of all home mortgages. Bread for the World Institute has documented this in the following state fact sheets. We want to raise a warning that the foreclosure epidemic and national housing crisis could lead to increasing hunger as well. These state fact sheets represent one of the most comprehensive treatments to date on the impact of subprime lending in poor communities.

All high-poverty counties and their corresponding subprime rates are included in this Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. excel
