The Gathering 2007

Schedule of Events

Friday, June 8

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Pre-Conference

Saturday, June 9

Noon-9 pm Registration (Bender Hall Lobby)

Pre-conference Sessions including:

  • 10 am-2 pm Brunch for Leaders of Women's Organizations ($50 charged on Gathering registration form)

The Presidents of the Women's Missionary organizations of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME), African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) and Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) churches invite you to a pre-conference brunch. Leaders and members of women's organizations will have a chance to meet each other as well as to learn about some of the important contributions of Christian women's organizations to ending hunger and poverty and promoting health around the world.

    • Speakers working in the rural, urban and international arenas will lift up both the role of women leaders in action against hunger and the impact of hunger on women and children in the United States and worldwide.

    • We hope to sow the seeds of future collaboration and increased advocacy among participants and our networks at home.

  • Noon-4pm Orientation for Seminarians ($50 charged on Gathering registration form)

Seminarians will connect, reflect and interact with colleagues from across the United States as we experience Sowing Seeds: Growing a Movement.  Dr. Cheryl Sanders, professor of Christian ethics at Howard University Divinity School, will lead the Pre-Conference Session on Saturday. During the session, seminary students will reflect on how Biblical imperatives, as well as our own faith traditions and lived experiences, lead to action on hunger, poverty and disease. Seminarians will also have opportunities to gather for daily prayer and continue to share reflections during The Gathering 2007.

  • Noon-5 pm Christian Reformed Church Justice Seekers Assembly

The CRC Justice Seekers Assembly will launch a comprehensive justice movement in the Christian Reformed Church. On June 9, come to identify your passion and explore resources for addressing it; build a network of justice seekers around the world, connecting CRC members in the United States with partners globally to build friendships and partnerships to work toward God's kingdom vision; get ideas and support to encourage your congregation to move from charity to justice; get equipped to start a justice movement in your own church, and throughout the denomination.

  • 2-5 pm Welcome Session for First-time Attendees (no cost)

In this orientation to Sowing Seeds: Growing a Movement, Bread for the World regional organizers and leaders of other host organizations will explore the concept of advocacy and help you navigate the Sowing Seeds agenda. Meet other first-timers and learn how to place your own “heart” for hungry and poor people at the center of your experience here.

  • 3:30-5:30 pm Pentecostal Church Leaders' Forum ($50 charged on Gathering registration form)

This gathering of national and local Pentecostal Leaders will provide an opportunity to dialogue about the issues of hunger and poverty and to hear from the leaders what their particular organization are doing to address these issues.

Bishop Monroe R. Saunders, Jr., Presiding Bishop of the United Churches of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) and Rev. Dr. Leonard Lovett, Executive Director of the Office of Ecumenical Relations and Urban Affairs for the Church of God In Christ will provide the context for the discussion and to see how Pentecostal churches can work in a united effort to be more involved in public policy issues related to hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world.
