A Brighter Future for Hungry People in 2009

At start of the New Year, I ask you to join in our 2009 Offering of Letters. You can help persuade Congress to reform U.S. foreign assistance to make it more effective in reducing hunger and poverty.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Bread for the World’s founding. In the months ahead, we’ll celebrate our victories and take on future challenges. A few highlights from the past decade include:

  • 29 million more African children are in school thanks to your work on the Jubilee debt relief campaign.
  • The U.S. government has doubled funding for effective programs that help developing countries in Africa and other poor parts of the world. This would not have happened without the urging of Bread for the World members.
  • Together, we have strengthened the U.S. nutrition programs, assisting the millions of families in this country who struggle to feed their children.

For a first-hand account of how our work together is having an impact, listen to my report of my recent trip to Mozambique and Malawi.

Plan now to join us at Bread for the World’s Gathering 2009, June 14-16, here in Washington, D.C.

Bill Moyers will be with us – to celebrate our 35 years, honor hunger advocates, and urge our nation’s decision makers to end hunger in our own country and around the world.

In Hope,

David Beckmann
