A Fasting Prayer: Free to be daring

Join Bread for the World in prayer to end hunger

Editor’s note: Until the end of the 115th Congress, Bread for the World and its partners will be praying and fasting, as part of the For Such a Time as This: A Call to Prayer, Fasting, and Advocacy project, to ensure that lawmakers protect vital programs for people who struggle with hunger.

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?”  (Isaiah 58:6)

Is this the fast of your choosing?

Holy God, we pray that in these days filled with activity, sometimes with affirmation and sometimes with challenges, keep us mindful of your will for us and all people. We pray that while many of us in the United States gather around tables of plenty, you will work through us to ‘loose’ the bonds of injustice in our world and keep us moving toward an end to hunger.

God, we pray that you will free us from the confines of our complacency. Help us to undo the thongs of the yoke and free us to live as new people, your creations of love and justice.

Free us to be daring. Free us to lean into challenges, to do our part to feed people living with hunger and let the oppressed go free. Help us to speak up for those who cannot be heard and lift up those who must be heard.

God, we pray in the name of your son Jesus, that you will indeed break every yoke.
