Government, Foreign Assistance, and God's Mission in the World
Todd Beamer Center, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois
Start Time: 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 18
End Time: 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 19
Co-Sponsors: Bread for the World Institute and the Center for Applied Christian Ethics, in partnership with Micah Challenge USA
Bread for the World Institute seeks to explore the biblical, theological, and experiential grounding for a Christian understanding of the government’s role in addressing global poverty. To address these questions, Bread for the World Institute and the Center for Applied Christian Ethics will gather a cross-section of Christians from the academy, relief and development, church mission and advocacy organizations who care deeply about God’s mission in the world. We aim to strengthen the church’s understanding of how Christians approach, inform, and develop their positions on U.S. foreign assistance policy.
Focus Questions
- How do we understand the biblical and theological grounding for the government’s role in addressing global poverty?
- Why, should, and how can churches engage in the larger discussion of government responses to global poverty?
- How do we understand the church’s global poverty advocacy role in the context of God’s mission in the world?
Participants
All participants will play an active role in the Consultation. Participants are invited because of their experience, expertise, and position within their religious organizations. They include theologians, Christian ethicists, missiologists, Christian relief and development leaders, church leaders, denominational staff, mission visionaries, religion journalists, and Christian college and seminary leaders who represent important perspectives on this topic.
