About the Offering of Letters
"Constituent letters count! And Bread for the World letters are special, not only because Bread members are generally well-informed, but because they write to help others, not themselves."
— Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA)
Each year, we conduct a major legislative campaign, known as our Offering of Letters.
People of faith write letters to Congress in support of hunger-fighting legislation. They often place these letters in the offering plate during church services, prayerfully offering them to God as a gift of citizenship.
This action teaches everyone in church that letters to Congress are a fit offering to God—that citizenship is an integral part of stewardship.
Campus and other groups hold similar events.
The Offering of Letters enables individual Christians—many of whom have never written their members of Congress—to see their concerns translated into policies that help hungry and poor people improve their lives. Together, we win significant gains for hungry and poor people year after year.
2009 Offering of Letters
Bread for the World’s 2009 Offering of Letters will press the new Congress and the new administration to fix U.S. foreign aid to make it more effective in reducing hunger and poverty.
While U.S. assistance is making a difference in millions of lives, the way we deliver long-term foreign assistance could be made far more effective.
Our government’s global development policies and programs are scattered across 12 departments, 25 different agencies, and nearly 60 government offices. A more efficient foreign assistance system – with better coordination, better accountability, better clarity – means people get help faster and more effectively.
Increasing hunger around the world is a “silent tsunami” threatening millions of lives. This should be a wake-up call for the U.S. to rethink foreign assistance and elevate global development as a national priority.
If foreign aid is fixed, more lives can be saved. Fewer children will die of hunger. Parents will be able to feed their families in the years to come. Better foreign aid also means less waste.
In 2009, a new U.S. president and Congress present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make foreign assistance more effective in reducing hunger and poverty. Please join us.
