What is an Offering of Letters?

Constituent letters count! And Bread for the World letters are special, not only because Bread members are generally well-informed, but because they write to help others, not themselves.

-Representative Jim Leach (R-IA)

Each year, Bread for the World conducts a major legislative campaign, known as our Offering of Letters. People of faith throughout the country write letters to Congress in support of hunger-fighting legislation. They often place these letters in the offering plate during church services, prayerfully offering them to God as a gift of citizenship. This action teaches everyone in church that letters to Congress are a fit offering to God—that citizenship is an integral part of stewardship. Campus and other groups hold similar events.

The Offering of Letters enables individual Christians—many of whom have never written their members of Congress—to see their concerns translated into policies that help hungry and poor people improve their lives. Year after year, they generate mountains of thoughtful mail to our nation's political leaders—and win significant gains for hungry and poor people.
