APRIL 2009: A Place to Live

What comes first in development? In this month’s Breadcast, Habitat for Humanity's Chris Vincent points out that often, before poor people can take steps to improve their health or educate their children, they need adequate housing—buildings that provide sufficient shelter. Worldwide, 1.6 billion people live without adequate shelter, and nearly as many are constantly struggling to stay on the land where they live  // AND ... Bread staffers interview Nicaraguan farmer Pedro Granada, whose experience offers a glimpse of how effective land programs can help poor people lift themselves out of hunger and poverty.

Learn more: Habitat for Humanity's 2008 Shelter Report explains how insecure tenure—the lack of a title to one’s home or land—is a major cause of poverty housing.
