Child and Adult Nutrition
- Federal policy needs to make it easier for schools and other organizations to receive funding to offer meals….As with the SFSP, federal policy should be changed to make it easier for child care providers and youth programs to offer nutritious meals and snacks (Hunger Report 2006, Page 65) Cross Reference: The Summer Food Service Program
See Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), "Lugar summer food pilots," H.R. 3873
- "Bread for the World…urges you to do all that you can to ensure that our nation's child nutrition programs are strengthened and expanded to reach more eligible children. As you consider the Child Nutrition Improvement and Integrity Act, please support provisions that will:
1. Ensure that all children have access to the programs they are eligible for. Not one of our national nutrition programs is reaching all of the people who are eligible for services. Perhaps the most shocking example of this gap between need and services is the Summer Food Program. Administrative barriers prevent over 80 percent of the eligible children from getting a nutritious lunch during the summer. The Lugar Pilot should be made permanent and expanded to all fifty states and to all interested sponsors, including churches.
2. Improve the nutrition education and quality of food provided…Schools need assistance in serving more fresh fruits and vegetables. The WIC food package should be updated to reflect current nutrition recommendation and cultural eating patterns.
3. Streamline the programs to reduce administrative errors and make it easier for families to apply for services…Making all children in homes with incomes below 185% of the poverty level eligible for free lunches; expanding direct certification between programs and allowing yearlong certification for school meals; and WIC would improve participation and program integrity" (Letter to Congressman, BFW Letters 1998-Present).
