Update on Week 3 Ingredient for Hope

May 22, 2008:

The House of Representatives passed an FY08/FY09 emergency supplemental last week to cover both military costs and perceived emergency domestic needs.  The $183.7 billion bill was split into three amendments.  The first on funding for Iraq and Afghanistan did not pass.  The second on war policy and third on other funding priorities, including food aid did.

The Senate Appropriations Committee held their markup of the emergency supplemental as well last week.  Its bill, as drafted, would provide $193 billion, about $9.1 billion more than the House version. That includes $168.9 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The full Senate considered the supplemental on the floor this morning and passed the domestic spending plus the international assistance such as food aid.  Votes on war policy and funding were still ongoing.

There is expected to be an informal conference over the recess between staff and the bill will be sent to the President after the Memorial Day recess.
