Beckmann to Speak on ‘Ending Hunger: The People and Congress’ at the Press Club
Listen: Fighting Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in Uganda
Washington, DC, September 7, 2010
Leading anti-hunger and poverty advocate Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World and 2010 World Food Prize laureate, will speak on “Ending Hunger: The People and Congress” at a National Press Club luncheon on September 13 at 12:30 p.m.
Beckman will talk about the anti-hunger issues that face the U.S. Congress as elected representatives reconvene from their summer recess and face the November elections. Bread for the World anticipates that the latest U.S. poverty figures, to be released early next week, will show the biggest increase in poverty since record-keeping began.
Beckmann, an economist and ordained Lutheran minister, was named a 2010 World Food Prize laureate in June. The award, established in 1986 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Norman Borlaug, is considered the Nobel Prize equivalent for food and agriculture. He was recognized for his achievements in building one of the “world’s foremost grassroots organizations leading the charge to end hunger and poverty for millions of people around the world.” His new book, Exodus from Hunger, due out in October, is graced by a foreword from Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
To reserve a seat, call (202) 662-7501 or email reservations@press.org. The cost of the luncheon is $17 for National Press Club members, $28 for their guests, and $35 for the general public. To submit a question in advance, put BECKMANN in the subject line and email president@press.org before September 13.
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
