Bread for the World Commends Senate’s Bipartisan Efforts to Reform Immigration
When Women Flourish...So Do Men March 26
Washington, DC, April 17, 2013
Bread for the World is encouraged by the Senate’s bipartisan efforts towards comprehensive immigration reform.
“We are pleased that this immigration bill emphasizes a timely and fair pathway to citizenship, which is an immediate way to lift hundreds of thousands of people out of hunger and poverty,” said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “This proposal is a promising step towards improving our broken immigration system.”
For several years, Bread for the World has advocated for effective poverty-focused development assistance, addressing the root causes of unauthorized migration to the United States—hunger, poverty, lack of economic opportunity, and inequality. Alleviating those problems abroad will help moderate the flow of unauthorized immigration to the United States. Bread for the World also supports immigration reform policies that facilitate the reduction of hunger and poverty among immigrants now in the United States and contribute to U.S. economic growth.
“Any discussion of immigration reform must address the root causes of unauthorized migration while providing viable solutions to the hunger and poverty many immigrants face here in the United States,” added Beckmann. “We urge the House to seriously consider the Senate’s proposal and move us quickly towards a solution to our nation’s immigration crisis.”
Later today, Rev. Beckmann will join other religious leaders and Christian advocates from across the country in the Evangelical Day of Prayer and Action for Immigration Reform in Washington, D.C. During the event, members of the Evangelical Immigration Table will proclaim a biblical version of immigration reform that respects the rule of law, reunites families, and upholds human dignity.
