Letter to the Editor: Farm Bill and Food

Washington, DC, June 19, 2013

EDITOR: Thanks to Rep. Jared Huffman for speaking out in opposition to cuts to SNAP (food stamps) in the House Farm Bill and for translating his words into deeds by trying to live on the average benefit of $4.50 a day (“GOP's extreme austerity diet,” Close to Home, Tuesday).

Last week we, along with Bread for the World members from across the country, lobbied on Capitol Hill on behalf of anti-hunger programs. We found Huffman and Sen. Barbara Boxer to be supportive. We hope that Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who supported cuts to SNAP in the Senate bill, reads Huffman's op-ed. We hope she will oppose the much harsher cuts to domestic and international anti-hunger programs in the House bill if, as we fear, they are approved and come back to the Senate.

The House majority is very solicitous of billion-dollar corporations but not of poor, hungry children.

Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.
