Congress must strengthen child nutrition support

As noted in “Hunger pains” in The Gazette on March 25, use of food pantries is increasing significantly due to the economy and the aftermath of the June flood. Local churches and other organizations are responding valiantly to the growing need.
In addition to providing direct food aid, we can also combat hunger by urging Congress to strengthen the Child Nutrition Act, which is due for its five-year reauthorization this spring. This act includes programs such as school lunch, school breakfast and summer food service, all of which serve to provide children with the nutrition they need to learn and grow.
Congressional action is needed especially to increase the number of school breakfast programs and summer food sites available to low-income families. Nutrition standards for all the programs should also be improved. Poor nutrition puts children at risk for a range of cognitive, behavioral, and physical problems.
Congress needs to hear from us now.
