Bread for the World Applauds Obama’s Focus on Job Creation

Washington, DC, January 27, 2010—Bread for the World applauded President Barack Obama for committing to put more American workers back on the job and restoring security for middle class families during his State of the Union address tonight.

"President Obama is clearly responding to calls from America's middle class and his proposals will certainly go a long way to strengthen them. But the voices of low-income people cannot be forgotten,” said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “We call on the administration to end childhood hunger through strong nutrition programs and solid tax credits that put more money in the hands of low-income working families."

According to the 2010 Hunger Report: A Just and Sustainable Recovery, dollar for dollar, one of the best investments the United States can make is to create green jobs. Workers could quickly be trained to do their jobs using green building methods, clean energy, and environmentally-friendly materials. “These are the kind of jobs that will help us to attain a sustainable economic recovery,” said Rev. Beckmann.
