Take Action

Thank you for submitting your creative ideas for successful Offering of Letters events! Here are some ways people held offerings in 2006. Remember to tell us what you did for your offering on this year’s evaluation form in the back of the handbook or online.

"I gave my 13-year-old daughter the sample letter and the names of our members of Congress to take with her to school. Twelve of her friends wrote letters for our offering."

  – Margaret H.,
Philadelphia, PA

"We took the photos, statistics and sample letter from the Offering of Letters kit and posted them around our church to raise awareness of hunger and poverty issues."

– Katherine H.,
Waco, TX

"We had a table in the student center all week for those who wanted to write letters to their members of Congress. We generated a lot of letters and interest. We look forward to helping the movement grow on our campus."

– Melissa M.
Asbury Seminary, FL

"We got through to hearts through the stomachs. We placed cookies and coffee cake on the letter-writing tables to encourage people to stop by."

– Alice C.,
Birmingham, AL

"We had a bread sale along with our offering. We sent the proceeds to Bread for the World to help with future lobbying efforts."

– Gloria F.,
Baldwin, WI

"While parents were writing, we gave the children paper plates printed with, "Dear Senator Schumer, Please vote for the One Spirit campaign! Your friend, ______.' The kids colored and decorated these plates, adding food illustrations. We mailed these plates along with the parents' letters. The kids loved being included… even the tiny tykes."

– Mary M.,
Washington Mills, NY

"We planned our Offering of Letters to coincide with a sermon on Chapter 6 of John. I preached about physical and spiritual hunger, and put a basket in our narthex where congregants could place their letters. Our young adults were very pleased to see us engaging in social justice issues."

– Doyle S.,
Jefferson City, MO
