Triple Your Impact this Christmas with Rick Steves’ Match

Washington, D.C. – Rick Steves’ Europe announced today it is donating $200,000 to Bread for the World as a part of its Climate Smart Commitment. The funds will allow Bread to expand its work on hunger and climate change.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Climate Smart Commitment,” said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “Climate change threatens to reverse the remarkable progress the world has made against hunger. People experiencing hunger and poverty around the world are being hit hardest. We thank Rick Steves for recognizing that travelers contribute to climate change in a big way – and for doing something about it.”

Bread for the World communicates with lawmakers – and with more than 20 million concerned citizens – about the connection between climate change and hunger. It was a theme of Bread for the World Institute’s 2017 Hunger Report and a follow-up video. Climate change is also one of five priority causes of hunger in the 2019 Hunger Report to be released this summer.

“Rick Steves’ focus on the impact of climate change is critically important,” said Asma Lateef, director of Bread for the World Institute. “Unpredictable weather patterns and more intense droughts and floods drive increased food insecurity and malnutrition, and contribute to forced migration and conflict. These grants recognize there are many ways to address climate change and to help people adapt to the changes already underway.”
