Week of Prayer: ‘Pray without ceasing’

Bread for the World 2014 Gathering and Lobby Day. Bread for the World.

By Bishop Jose Garcia

“Pray without ceasing …” That’s Paul’s admonition to the Christians at Thessalonica, and it’s Scripture’s call to us today.

We know that ending extreme hunger and poverty is possible. In fact, the world’s leaders recently committed to this by 2030 in their adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. This goal is also shared by many Christian organizations that assist people struggling with hunger and poverty worldwide. But we know this isn’t possible without God.

We are partnering with the OurPrayer Ministry at Guideposts, a nonprofit organization that touches millions of lives every day through products and services that inspire, encourage, and uplift. They lead thousands of people in prayer daily and receive millions of prayer petitions annually.

Together we are convening a Week of Prayer to End Hunger. The prayer campaign runs October 12-18. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Join thousands of people around the world in Guideposts’ 7-day prayer challenge.
  2. Celebrate Bread for the World Sunday in your local church.
  3. Commit to regular prayer for an end to hunger and receive bi-weekly prayer updates.

When Jesus taught us about prayer, he kept things simple but included a call for the full realization of God’s vision for the world: “Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.” Here at Bread for the World, we want to pray that same prayer faithfully and persistently

We hope you will join us this week in lifting up:

  • all people who experience hunger, that God would work to fill them with good things
  • the Church in the U.S. and around the world, that we would raise a chorus of prophetic voices echoing God’s call for justice and an end to hunger
  • our elected official in Congress, that they would hear God’s call to end hunger and poverty voiced by so many.
