Washington, D.C. –The Rumi Forum is honoring Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, with its Extraordinary Commitment of Service to the Community Award today.

The Rumi Forum recognizes Beckmann for his “enormous contributions to stand with those who struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families and your commitment to overcome hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world…(S)uch contributions are extraordinarily important to reduce inequity among those who are in need for much support in the community.”

“I am honored by the Rumi Forum’s award,” said Beckmann, “but all the glory goes to God and the countless Bread volunteers around the country who persistently advocate to end hunger. We will continue to work as one body of believers to end hunger at home and around the world.”

The Rumi Forum was founded in 1999. According to its website, its mission is “to foster intercultural dialogue, stimulate thinking and exchange of opinions on supporting and fostering democracy and peace and to provide a common platform for education and information exchange.”

The Rumi Forum’s annual awards are presented to extraordinary individuals and organizations who have greatly contributed their time, energy, leadership, and dedication to the cause of dialogue, peace, tolerance, community service, and understanding.

Beckmann will accept the award during the 2014 Rumi Peace and Dialogue Awards ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The awards are named after Rumi, a 13th century poet, jurist, and Sufi mystic.

“Educating and empowering people to speak out against the forces that allow hunger to persist are crucial in the fight against hunger. We know that, with God’s help, we can end widespread hunger once and for all,” concluded Beckmann.
