A Prayer for Families Affected by the Government Shutdown

In Luke chapter 6, we read,

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
    for you will be filled…

“But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.

“Woe to you who are full now,
    for you will be hungry.

As we move into day 38 of the government shutdown, we hold in prayer families who haven’t received SNAP or WIC benefits this week. While some states are finding the funding to cover the benefits, other states are unable to do so. We give thanks for all who are responding to this increased need through mutual aid organizations and food pantries around the country who are seeing more and more people in need. May communities be strengthened in this moment as we share resources with one another.

Let us Pray

We are reminded, O God, that you are a God of abundance. May we be moved by this promise to share with one another our time, our talent, and our treasure to help meet one another’s needs in this time. May our generosity be mutual. May our resources overflow.

We pray, O God, for all who are living in the fear and anxiety of this time of uncertainty—uncertainty about benefits, uncertainty about jobs, uncertainty about how long this shutdown will go on. We pray for a way to be made—a way that honors the dignity of all of your children.

In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen
