Donate Now. Help End Hunger.

Every dollar you give to support our advocacy helps Bread for the World secure hundreds of dollars in lifesaving assistance for families in the United States and around the world.

Make a Gift

Our persistent and faithful advocacy has transformed the lives of millions of people, but we couldn’t do it without you.

For every dollar you donate, Bread helps win hundreds of dollars in federal government assistance for people experiencing hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world. That’s a powerful return on your investment to build pathways out of poverty.

We take our role as fiscal stewards seriously. We work to keep our overhead rate low and maximize the impact of every gift entrusted to us.

Give Monthly. Join the Baker’s Dozen

Join our Baker’s Dozen monthly giving program and help end hunger every month of the year. Your sustained support will provide the vital resources necessary for our advocacy together, equip our members to take action now, and organize like-minded advocates across the nation, month after month. Monthly giving is also easy—the amount you choose is automatically charged each month, and you can cancel or change your commitment at any time.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)

Giving through a donor-advised fund (DAF) is a tax-efficient way to support Bread for the World Institute.

With a DAF, you can make an immediate charitable contribution into the DAF qualifying for a tax deduction, all while taking your time to decide where to recommend grants from the fund in the future.

Bread for the World Institute is deeply appreciative of grants from DAFs, as they help sustain the Institute’s vital nonpartisan policy research and analysis on hunger, along with strategies to end it.

To direct a grant from your DAF to Bread for the World Institute, simply log into your fund’s portal, search for Bread for the World Institute, and indicate the amount you would like to contribute. You may also wish to name Bread for the World Institute as an organizational beneficiary of your donor-advised fund. You can also do so through your fund’s portal by using the information below.

Tax-Smart Giving

Charitable Distribution from IRAs

Unlock a tax-smart approach to impact Bread for the World Institute throughout your lifetime by giving through your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other Qualified Retirement Plan.

If you are 70 ½ years or older, consider making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), also known as an “IRA Charitable Rollover”, directing funds from your IRA to Bread for the World Institute. By doing so, you can make a tax-free gift now while fulfilling all or part of the Required Minimum Distribution and reducing your taxable income.

If you wish to give in this way, ensure your IRA administrator issues a check directly to Bread for the World Institute. Note that the total of all your 2024 QCD gifts cannot exceed $105,000 per person in a household. Your thoughtful contributions pave the way for meaningful change by providing food for the hungry.

Stocks and Securities

Explore tax-smart giving by considering the double tax benefits associated with donating publicly traded securities, commonly known as stocks and bonds, to Bread for the World Institute. Transferring stock held for a year and a day can grant you a tax deduction for its full market value and shield you from capital gains taxes on highly appreciated stock.

Contributing publicly traded securities not only results in savings on income and capital gains taxes but also provides a strategic way to support the Institute’s vital research and analysis, maximizing your financial advantages. While Bread for the World gladly accepts donations of stock or bonds, it is important to note that the donation itself is not tax-deductible.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable gift annuity provides fixed payments for life in exchange for a generous gift of cash or securities to Bread for the World Institute. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Foundation manages annuities on behalf of Bread.

What makes gift annuities especially appealing is the simplicity in its set up and the added security that the payments you receive are backed by the general resources of the ELCA.

This unique giving method not only ensures fixed payments for life but also opens up the possibility of tax savings, all while actively contributing to our mission to end hunger.

Charitable gift annuities can be funded with gifts of cash, long-term appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. In the year you establish a charitable gift annuity, you may qualify for a tax deduction.

For those 65 or older, a contribution of $10,000 or more can establish a gift annuity through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Foundation. Recent rate increases mean that your guaranteed annual income could exceed expectations, making this a compelling and impactful way to provide food for the hungry.
