Washington, D.C., January 31, 2026 —Bread for the World issued the following statement regarding the Senate passage of the remaining FY26 appropriations bills. The statement can be attributed to Rev. Eugene Cho, president and CEO of Bread for the World.

“Bread for the World members and hunger advocates across the United States have spent the last year advocating for a restoration of funds for humanitarian aid, food security, and global nutrition and health programs, that will alleviate poverty, disease, and malnutrition. We were heartened when the House passed a bipartisan FY26 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations bill, which includes funding for these vital programs, such as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and Feed the Future, among others. We applaud the Senate’s vote to move this bill forward, and we now urge the House of Representatives to expeditiously pass the FY26 funding bill in the effort to avoid a lengthy government shutdown and meet the needs of vulnerable populations, including women and children.

“We were encouraged by the robust bipartisan dialogue in the Senate’s final conversations on FY26 funding. While we affirm elements from the FY26 appropriations package—including funding for lifesaving international aid—that will bring relief to people experiencing hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around world, the tragic killing of American citizens and mistreatment of peaceful protestors by overzealous U.S. immigration enforcement is indefensible. As followers of Jesus, we believe every human life bears the image of God and possesses inherent dignity.

“Here in Washington, members of Congress have fielded thousands of calls from their constituents around the funding mechanisms found in the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security and the moral responsibility to uphold and establish guardrails that will protect every person who exercises their Constitutional rights at protests, in their schools, in their places of worship, and at their front doors. We have seen the reality on the ground of reckless and violent immigration enforcement that has a very real impact on hunger. Children stay home from school and miss meals, and parents are afraid to leave their homes for groceries.

“For the last year, Republicans and Democrats have worked together on Capitol Hill to develop a robust bipartisan agreement on how to restore lifesaving aid programs. Our prayer is that the bipartisan spirit that approved humanitarian aid will extend into the final conversations around the FY26 budget. And with God’s help and the faithful action of the people across the United States, we pray for an end to the violence that we have witnessed on our streets and for lasting peace across this nation.”
