Prayers for Hunger Hotspots as of September 2025

In light of the crisis unfolding in Gaza, Sudan, and other places experiencing severe hunger, we’re inviting you—and our full community—to pause and pray with us. This is part of a series of Prayers to End Hunger focused on the world’s most urgent hunger hotspots.

According to the FAO–WFP Hunger Hotspots report for June–October 2025, five regions face the gravest risk of catastrophic hunger: Sudan, Palestine (Gaza Strip), South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali. The report underscores a severe funding shortfall for addressing conflicts and food insecurity in these and other hotspots worldwide. As of May 2025, only 9 percent of the $12.2 billion required for the global food security response—and just 4 percent of the $2.6 billion needed for nutrition—had been received. With 75 percent of humanitarian funding coming from just four donors, and half of that from the United States, cuts to U.S. foreign assistance reverberate across the entire system.

Last week, in our newsletter, we asked Bread members write to their members of Congress asking them to robustly fund lifesaving humanitarian aid and oppose the White House’s cancellation of nearly $5 billion in international assistance. 

Further reductions of U.S. assistance will only make things worse. Let us pray for our members of Congress that they might defend critical funding for international assistance. 

Let us pray. 

God, we call on you now, with images of hungry children in our minds, with grief in our hearts, and the feeling of powerlessness in our bones. 

We know that you are our hope in desperate times. And so, we call on you now. 

Touch the hearts of these elected leaders, that they might see the power in their hands to save lives. Give them the courage to stand up for what is decent and right in this world—feeding families who are starving. 

Touch the hearts of constituents in every district to reach out to their members of Congress and urge them to do the right thing. 

You promised that if we seek your Kingdom, that you would answer our prayers. O God we are seeking a world where every child, every person can thrive. And so we say, may it be so.
