WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Board of Directors of Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute announced today that Reverend Eugene Cho has resigned as President and CEO, effective July 17.

Since joining Bread for the World in 2020, Cho has led the organization through a period of extraordinary challenge and change while remaining deeply committed to Bread’s mission of ending hunger at home and abroad.

“Serving as President and CEO of Bread for the World has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Cho. “I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have served this organization and for the extraordinary staff, members, supporters, and partners who advance our shared mission every day.”  Cho will miss the many colleagues and partners he worked with during his tenure at Bread, but he looks forward to spending more time with his family and parents, as well as continuing to preach and speak around the country about hunger, justice, and leadership at the intersection of faith and public life—encouraging pastors, leaders, missionaries, and justice advocates from churches and nonprofit organizations in the pursuit of God’s kingdom here on earth.

The Board expressed its deep appreciation for Cho’s service and leadership during a challenging period for the anti-hunger movement. During his tenure, Cho navigated the unprecedented challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic and an increasingly polarized political environment, helped reach new Christian denominations and Evangelical churches, sustained Bread’s involvement with the Circle of Protection, and enhanced Bread’s grassroots capacity.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank Eugene for his years of dedicated service to Bread for the World,” said Jeremy Everett, President of the Board of Directors. “Throughout his tenure, Eugene has brought passion, faith, and a steadfast commitment to ending hunger and advancing justice. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him every blessing in the next chapter of his leadership and ministry.”

Bread for the World remains focused on its mission of advocating for policies and programs that help address hunger in the United States and around the world. The Board and staff are committed to maintaining continuity in the organization’s work and supporting advocates, partners, and communities during this transition period.

The Board has begun the process of identifying the next leader of Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute. Beginning July 18, Reverend Heather Taylor will serve as Interim President and CEO of Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute until a permanent successor is appointed. Taylor has been a senior leader at Bread for over eight years, and her deep understanding of and commitment to Bread’s work will provide steady leadership during this period of transition.
