Washington, D.C., June 26, 2026 — Bread for the World issued the following statement regarding the Senate Agriculture Committee’s release of its Farm Bill text. The statement can be attributed to Rev. Eugene Cho, President and CEO of Bread for the World.

“While we affirm the Senate Agriculture Committee’s Farm Bill text that reauthorizes Food for Peace and the McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program through 2031, both longtime Bread for the World priorities, there is more work to be done on the domestic side. The current text of the Senate Farm Bill does not address the new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cost-share requirements that last year’s budget reconciliation law, H.R. 1, placed on states, giving states no additional time to prepare.

“States are already under financial strain. Without a delay in implementation of the cost-share requirement, many states will be forced to choose: cut SNAP enrollment, reduce the staff and capacity that keep the program running, pull funding from other essential state and local services, or raise new revenues. Each path ends the same way, with fewer families able to put food on the table.

“As the Senate Agriculture Committee moves to markup, we are hopeful that there will be an opportunity to include a cost-share delay that extends more time to more states as they work to lower their payment error rates and support food insecure families in their states. We urge lawmakers from both parties to act with clarity and mercy as they undertake these important negotiations. States need more time to prepare without disrupting food access for the children, seniors, veterans, and families — especially those living in rural communities — who depend on SNAP.

“As people of faith, we believe every person is made in the image of God and deserves access to adequate food. We will keep working with Congress to strengthen this Farm Bill for people facing hunger in the United States and around the world.”
