Bread for the World

Washington, D.C. – Bread for the World congratulates President-elect Joe Biden, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris, and all 2020 election winners. Bread further urges Congress and the White House to enact an orderly peaceful transition, return to the negotiating table, and pass a COVID relief package that helps the millions of families who still struggle to make ends meet due to the pandemic. The following statement can be attributed to Rev. Eugene Cho, president and CEO of Bread for the World:

“Bread for the World congratulates President-elect Joe Biden, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris, and all of the 2020 election winners. We look forward to working with the Biden Administration and members of Congress who have been reelected, and meeting with newly elected lawmakers about our mission to end hunger and let them know why it is possible to do so in our lifetime.

“As we embark on this next chapter in our nation, we recognize that we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. It is essential for us to heal the political divide and pass a COVID relief bill that helps individuals and families still struggling with hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world.

“Since May, 8 million people in the U.S. have slipped into poverty. Black and Latino families in the U.S. are more than twice as likely as white families to report that their households do not get enough to eat. And globally, more than 270 million people stand on the brink of starvation. As millions of Americans and people around the world experience hunger and poverty, we pray, in a spirit of unity, that we follow in the footsteps of Jesus to bring hope and practical solutions to help those desperately in need.

“God calls on us to care for our neighbors. The White House and Congress must now expeditiously return to the negotiating table and pass a comprehensive COVID relief package. We pray for a peaceful and faithful transition that will pave the way to building back a stronger America and better world.
