Hispanic Heritage Month begins

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15^th and concludes Oct. 15^th of each year. Several Latin American countries celebrate their independence during September starting with Brazil on Sept. 7^th, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador celebrate on Sept. 15^th, and Mexico, Chile and Belize also have September birthdays. Imagine what it must have taken each of these nations to not only achieve independence but also to build a system of government and laws that help define who they are as a nation and people. 

The United States also did this. First to define itself through the Constitution and laws. Second, it redefined itself in response to the U.S. Civil War and the many great events of the 20^th century. 

Today, we are redefining America by deconstructing some laws and policies that were long relied upon to ensure equity. Reading again from Micah, we are challenged in the midst of adversity to focus on what God asks of us. God calls us to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly.  

He has told you, O mortal, what is good,
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice and to love kindness
and to walk humbly with your God? 

Micah 6:8

Let us pray:

God of Justice, your word guides us in all things.

You challenge us to live in right relationship with you and one another as well. 

You challenge us to be people of justice. You call us to act justly and to demand justice from others.

You challenge us to seek mercy and kindness. You call us to show mercy and kindness to others, even when we disagree.

You challenge us to walk humbly alongside of you. You call us to be humble alongside of all our siblings. 

Through your son Jesus Christ, we know that in life and in death, we belong to you. 

Bless us O Lord that we might be more faithful.
