When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat. – Matthew 14: 15-16
In just a few short days advocates from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C., at Bread for the World’s Advocacy Summit to act on these words of Jesus “you give them something to eat.” Together, they will pray, learn, build community, and visit their members of Congress while working toward a common goal: ending hunger.
Across the country, more advocates will be adding their voices by pledging to write to their legislators from their homes on the same day advocates are speaking up on Capitol Hill.
As we prepare to lift our voices together, we also must pray.
God of all good things,
We give thanks for the opportunities before us to advocate for and with those who struggle to put food on their tables.
We pray for all who will be gathered in Washington, D.C., to urge elected leaders to do their part and protect federal programs that provide food assistance to those in need both here in the U.S. and around the world. Give them traveling mercies, give them courage, give them confidence, give them grace.
We pray for all those speaking up from across the country to amplify the message being delivered on Capitol Hill. Encourage each person as they follow Jesus’ guidance to speak up for their neighbors and communities to have something to eat.
We pray all this in Jesus’ name.
Amen
