You don’t have to be an expert to end hunger, but you do need to act.
By taking a few moments to pick up the phone or email your members of Congress, you can help bring hope and opportunity to millions of people experiencing hunger all around the world. When Congress hears a chorus of voices calling for the same thing, they do act.
On June 7, hundreds of Bread for the World’s faithful advocates will be on Capitol Hill meeting with their members of Congress as part of our annual Lobby Day. Your calls will make their message to invest in nutrition stronger. We need everyone in the game to end hunger.
Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard (1-800-326-4941) and ask to be connected to your member of Congress or email all three of your legislators. Tell your senators and representative to invest in nutrition for mothers and children in the United States and abroad. Urge them to do three things:
- Pass the Global Food Security Act of 2016 (S. 1252) in the House of Representatives.
- Invest at least $230 million in nutrition in global health programs in fiscal year 2017.
- Oppose H.R. 5003, the Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016, as written and instead pass a bipartisan child nutrition reauthorization bill that connects hungry kids in the U.S. with nutritious meals.
Ending hunger means more than just providing enough food and calories for everyone, it means getting enough of the right food.
Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications in pregnancy or childbirth. Globally, 159 million children are stunted because they lack access to the nutrition they need to reach their God-given potential. Each summer, millions of U.S. children lose access to the meals they need to thrive when school cafeterias close for vacation.
Those are problems with solutions – solutions that are in the hands of your members of Congress. Call them today and tell them to invest in nutrition for mothers and children in the United States and abroad.
