Bread Official Statement on the Passing of Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski

Washington, D.C. – Bread for the World is deeply saddened to learn about the tragic passing of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski and her staff members, Zachary Potts and Emma Thompson. We send our deepest condolences and prayers to the many families and friends who are grieving.

“Rep. Walorski was a true champion in the fight to end hunger and malnutrition. As the co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus, she made it her mission to combat food insecurity not just across the globe, but here at home as well,” said Bread for the World president and CEO Rev. Eugene Cho.

“I can say without any exaggeration that she was a real friend of those who struggled with hunger both domestically and internationally,” said David Miner, former Bread for the World board member and current projects chair of the Indy Hunger Network. ''She cared about hunger. I've never met another politician who actually ran a campaign ad focused on it. She really cared.”

Bread for the World is honored to have worked alongside Congresswoman Walorski in her sponsorship of the Food Donation Improvement Act that would encourage food donation efforts across the country; her introduction of legislation last month to address potential global food shortages by expediting the delivery of international food aid; her leadership to convene the upcoming White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health; and her efforts to advance many other pieces of anti-hunger legislation during her time in Congress. Rep. Walorski’s work around ending hunger was transformational, and her leadership will always be remembered.

During difficult times like these, we take comfort in knowing, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” -Psalm 34:18. May these steadfast public servants rest in eternal peace.
