Washington, D.C., October 2, 2026 – Bread for the World issued the following statement regarding the obligation of nearly all congressionally approved foreign assistance funds set to expire on September 30. The statement can be attributed to Rev. Heather Taylor, interim president and CEO of Bread for the World.
“As time was running out for $19 billion in congressionally approved foreign assistance funding set to expire at the close of the fiscal year, the administration obligated nearly all of the funds just hours before the September 30 deadline, thereby ensuring they will not expire.
“Bread for the World commends the efforts of Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle who worked closely with the administration to ensure that these funds for critical nutrition and global health programming reach the people they are intended to serve.
“At Bread for the World, an organization committed to ending hunger in the U.S. and around the world, each dollar in foreign assistance funding represents an opportunity to save lives, feed children and families, deliver lifesaving medication, and help people access the nutrition and health services they need to thrive.
“With real lives at stake, it’s essential that our elected officials commit to responsible and timely allocation, obligation, and programming of congressionally approved funds. Bread for the World looks forward to additional transparency from the administration and vows to work alongside Congress on adequate oversight mechanisms for future FY27 funding.
“Bread for the World and its members will continue to advocate for robust, strategic investments in lifesaving global health and nutrition programs. As people of faith, we believe every human being is made in God’s image and should have enough nutritious food to flourish and be in good health.”
