Washington, D.C.,February 3, 2026 — Bread for the World issued the following statement regarding the House’s final passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations bill (SFOPS). The statement can be attributed to Rev. Eugene Cho, president and CEO of Bread for the World.
“Bread for the World welcomes the passage of the 2026 SFOPS appropriations bill on February 3. This bill is the culmination of thousands of hours of tireless advocacy and bipartisan negotiation and a major win for U.S. humanitarian assistance—and the people it serves.
“For nearly a year, we have seen unprecedented cuts to programs focused on humanitarian aid, and development assistance, including global nutrition and global health. The impact of these immediate and severe cuts has been felt by vulnerable children and families around the world. In response, Bread members and advocates—as well as people of goodwill across America—have relentlessly spoken up through calls, letters, emails, and meetings with their elected officials, asking them to protect these programs and their funding in the budget.”
“Bread for the World has been encouraged by the tremendous show of bipartisan support for humanitarian aid funding through this bill. In early January, the SFOPS Appropriations Bill passed the House of Representatives and included, $5.5 billion for humanitarian assistance programs, $5.9 billion for HIV/AIDS programming through PEPFAR, $165 million for global nutrition programs, and $720 million for food security and agricultural development programs, including $72 million for Feed the Future Innovation Labs, which develop new solutions to pressing food security challenges and support land grant universities.
“For millions of people around the world facing hunger, famine, health issues and disease, the passage of this bill will bring needed relief. We thank Congress for recognizing this and using their power to deliver hope on behalf of the American people.”
“We celebrate the collaborative and bipartisan effort of each member of Congress who listened to calls from their constituents to restore this vital funding. This bill reaffirms our nation’s critical role in providing humanitarian assistance while also making America stronger, safer, and more prosperous.
“As Christians, we are compelled and motivated by God’s command to love our neighbors and defend the rights of the poor. We are confident that this funding will save lives, feed the hungry, and help provide stability in a volatile world.”
