Pray for Elected Leaders

Prices are on the rise, and this is having a devastating impact on families who are trying to stretch SNAP dollars. It will only become more difficult for these families when new rules requiring states to take on significantly more of the costs for SNAP go into effect over a very short timeline. The new costs will stretch state budgets, making it a challenge to deliver food assistance to all who need and qualify for the SNAP program.

But Congress is working on the 2027 budget right now, and they have the power to make changes in the implementation of these new rules.

When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” – Matthew 14:15-16

As we sit with this text that reminds us to do our part, we pray for members of Congress to do their part to protect SNAP.

Let us pray.

God of Abundance,

Scripture tells us to ensure that our neighbors have food.

Scripture tells us that good leaders care for the most vulnerable members of society.

We raise our voices in prayer for the leaders we have elected to represent us.

We pray that they might be guided by the still, small voice from you.

We pray that they will remember the people in their districts who will be most affected by inevitable cuts to SNAP and other important programs.

We pray that they will speak and act with courage, recognizing that budgets are moral documents.

We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
